How to: Get started with the cloud

11th March 2014

Having recently experienced the wettest January on record, further talk about clouds may seem a little insensitive. However, the type of cloud we are concerned with (the cloud accounting kind) is a sure-fire way to get your accounts home and dry without needing an umbrella.

What is cloud accounting?

'The cloud' simply refers to information that is stored in one place online. This information can be accessed securely from any internet-ready device, including desktop computers, laptops, smartphones and tablets. The ability to handle accounts online wherever you are is extremely efficient, potentially saving you time and money.

Cloud accounting software

Various types of cloud accounting software are available, including Xero, Freeagent and E-conomic. Xero is a particularly popular choice for small and medium-sized enterprises as it allows them to:

  • Keep accounts information securely in one place rather than in various hard-to-find files and folders
  • Issue invoices and settle payments on the go
  • Get an in-depth overview of business finances within moments
  • Work collaboratively with colleagues and accountants (us!).
