This month, we’re marking a fantastic milestone, a decade of dedication, growth, and success for Joe Weston at Dunkley’s! From his first day as an eager apprentice to becoming a Director, Joe’s journey is nothing short of inspiring.
The Journey Begins
After leaving sixth form in 2012, Joe knew he wanted to dive straight into the working world. He began his career in the accounts department at Cadbury House Hotel, studying for his AAT Diploma alongside a job as a waiter in a local restaurant for three years.
During his studies, Joe realised his true ambition – working in accountancy practice. However, with little experience and few opportunities available, Joe took matters into his own hands. He researched the top 10 independent accountancy firms in Bristol, wrote a compelling cover letter, and sent it along with his CV to each of them. The rest, as they say, is history.
Climbing the Ranks at Dunkley’s
After impressing our founder, Mike Dunkley, in his interview, Joe secured an accountancy apprenticeship, fully funded by Dunkley’s. At just 24, he achieved his ACCA qualification, and then another 3 years after this obtaining his CTA qualification and in 2021 he became a dual-chartered accountant.
From there, Joe’s rise was swift. He consistently proved his dedication, expertise and leadership potential. With the guidance and mentorship of Lisa, his line manager throughout his journey, he was given clear objectives and achievable goals, each step pushing him closer to the next milestone.
In September 2023, Joe was invited to become a Director, and thus, he took his place on the board of Dunkley’s.
What Drives Joe?
For Joe, the growth of the firm, both in culture and team size, has been one of the most rewarding aspects of the past decade, including the recent merger with Gillespie’s. He has always been passionate about numbers, but more than that, he wanted a career that he could be proud of, with recognised qualifications to match. He has certainly achieved that!
Joe’s Advice to Aspiring Accountants
“Ask for it. Don’t wait to be noticed.”
A simple but powerful message – proactivity and ambition go a long way.
Happy 10-year anniversary, Joe! Here’s to the next chapter.
